As your trusted Veterinarians we want to ensure that each of our patients are protected from disease. With the news of the Canine Influenza (CIV) reaching North Carolina, we want to provide you with the best information to protect your family member. In accordance with the recommendations from the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Center for Disease Control, we are suggesting that you protect your pet by by washing your hands immediately after handling any dog that is not in your household, especially a sick dog, do not share bowls, collars, leashes, kennels etc. avoid taking your dog to areas such as dog parks, pet stores etc. and if you suspect that your pet is ill, isolate them from other housemates and seek veterinary care immediately. The virus is spread through direct contact as well as sneezing, coughing, exposure to contaminated objects and people moving between infected and uninfected dogs. Dog’s at risk for the Flu include puppies, adults and senior dogs. Those exposed are 80% likely to develop flu like symptoms. There is no vaccine available for the current H3N2 strain, however in an effort to protect our patients we are offering a flu vaccine for the strain of H3N8 which was approved by the FDA in 2009. One of our vaccine manufacturers, Zoetis, formerly known as Pfizer has released a study that shows the H3N8 vaccine, may cross protect when accompanied with our annual Da2PP4L vaccine. With confidence, Zoetis has offered a vaccine guarantee for up to 5,000.00 dollars in reimbursement should your pet contract the flu, to include the new strain, H3N2. To qualify for the guarantee the vaccine must be given by a veterinarian, also the initial vaccine must be followed by a booster given approximately 21-28 days following the initial dose. Side effects of the vaccine are limited and similar to that of a routine, annual vaccine. In an effort to provide the best care for your pet we require that all pets not seen within the last thirty days receive a thorough exam by one of our Veterinarians prior to being vaccinated. This is to ensure your pet is healthy enough to receive the vaccine. Understanding the importance of this preventative, we would like to offer the following $18.00 savings. For a total of $36.00 your pet will receive a thorough exam (if your pet has not been seen in the last thirty days), a regular value of $33.00 as well as the initial vaccine, a regular value of $21.00. Therefore your pet’s booster will consist of only the vaccination charge of $21.00. We welcome you to contact our office should you have any questions regarding the vaccine or to schedule your pet for a visit.
