Benny’s Story
Carolyn Hornbeck June 2011
I generally start my mornings with a 4 wheeler ride through the woods to my Grandparents house. I ride over to feed and care for my horses at my horse barn there. On the morning that I discovered Benny I was riding my four-wheeler through the woods to get to my barn to help my mom feed my horses. When I got to the dried creek in between my house and my Grandparents I found a German shepherd. This German shepherd had made the creek bed her home. She was scared, shy, thin and when I saw her I felt bad for her.
I immediately went back home, got her a bucket full of water and some food. When I walked up to her with this bucket of water she was so scared! She didn’t want to be near me. She wanted the food, but she didn’t trust me enough to come close enough to come near me to eat. I would leave it for her and she would eat it as long as I was not watching. So I started bringing her food and water every morning and night. I would also check up on her at least three times a day. One night it started to storm really badly and I was so worried about her!
I couldn’t just stay in the house with her outside all alone scared in the thunder and lightning. I decided to go out on the ATV look for her and she wasn’t there. I was miserable knowing that she was missing. It was one of the longest nights of my life! So I went back the next morning to see if maybe she showed back up and when I got to the dried up creek bed I saw her sitting there waiting on me. I could not believe she was there!
I was so happy to see her there waiting for me! So after a week of driving back there to feed and water her every day she started coming to me. After really gaining her trust I was able to catch her. Once I caught her I took her back to my house. When I got her home I gave her bath and brushed her. After about a month she started to put on weight, her coat was getting shiny, and she was adjusting to my other dogs. However, right after a month she started feeling bad and started throwing up blood and was not acting right.
Doyle, my step Dad, and I took her to North Star Veterinary Hospital to have her checked out and she seemed to just get sicker. I was so sad. I couldn’t believe the dog that I had fought so hard to save was so sick. I felt helpless. When we got her there they did some blood work and ran some tests. The tests showed that my sweet girl had heartworms and hookworms. She was in the hospital for the weekend and they gave her medicine.
She started feeling better and has started getting strong again. My Mom and I have decided that we are going to become her permanent foster home. I have fallen in love with her. I thought for a long time about what her name should be. After spending some time with her the name Benny just popped into my head. Benny seemed to fit her and that is what I decided to name her. Benny is now in a loving family that will take care of her and love her dearly.
